Las Vegas surprises first-time visitors in two ways: it’s more than they expected, and they almost always wish they’d stayed longer. Here’s what you need to know before your first trip.
What Most People Get Wrong
- They only plan for the Strip — Grand Canyon West is 2.5 hours away. Valley of Fire is 1 hour. Hoover Dam is on the way to Grand Canyon. The city is a base, not just a destination.
- They underestimate the heat — In summer, it’s 110°F (43°C). Carry water everywhere. Start outdoor tours at 6:30 AM.
- They don’t book tours in advance — Popular dates fill up. Book at least 48 hours ahead, ideally a week.
- They overpay for everything at the hotel — A bottle of water at the hotel minibar: $8. At CVS a block away: $1.50. Same for food, medicine, sunscreen.
- They try to see everything — You can’t. Pick 3–4 experiences and do them fully, rather than rushing through 10 things.
What You Must Do on a First Visit
- ✅ Grand Canyon West — No one leaves Las Vegas without visiting. It’s that important. $229/person
- ✅ Walk the Strip at night — The lights, the energy, the scale of it all. Unforgettable.
- ✅ Bellagio Fountains — Free. Watch at least one show.
- ✅ Fremont Street Experience — The original Las Vegas. Different vibe from the Strip, equally iconic.
- ✅ City Night Tour — Your first night in Vegas should be guided. $97/person, all the context, none of the confusion.
Practical Essentials
Currency
US Dollars (USD). ATMs everywhere. Credit cards accepted everywhere — Visa and Mastercard work at all businesses. International visitors: check your bank’s foreign transaction fees before you go.
Tipping
Tipping is standard in the US. Restaurant: 18–20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5/day. Tour guide: $10–20/person (appreciated but never required with us). Uber/Lyft: 15–20%.
Safety
The Strip and tourist areas are safe. Standard city awareness applies: don’t flash large amounts of cash, watch your belongings in crowded areas. Our tours depart and return to your hotel — no navigating unfamiliar areas alone.
Getting Around
The Strip is walkable (though long). Uber/Lyft are reliable and cheap. For tours outside the city, we provide transportation — no rental car needed.
