Las Vegas surprises first-time visitors in two ways: it’s more than they expected, and they almost always wish they’d stayed longer. Here’s what you need to know before your first trip.

What Most People Get Wrong

  1. They only plan for the Strip — Grand Canyon West is 2.5 hours away. Valley of Fire is 1 hour. Hoover Dam is on the way to Grand Canyon. The city is a base, not just a destination.
  2. They underestimate the heat — In summer, it’s 110°F (43°C). Carry water everywhere. Start outdoor tours at 6:30 AM.
  3. They don’t book tours in advance — Popular dates fill up. Book at least 48 hours ahead, ideally a week.
  4. They overpay for everything at the hotel — A bottle of water at the hotel minibar: $8. At CVS a block away: $1.50. Same for food, medicine, sunscreen.
  5. They try to see everything — You can’t. Pick 3–4 experiences and do them fully, rather than rushing through 10 things.

What You Must Do on a First Visit

Practical Essentials

Currency

US Dollars (USD). ATMs everywhere. Credit cards accepted everywhere — Visa and Mastercard work at all businesses. International visitors: check your bank’s foreign transaction fees before you go.

Tipping

Tipping is standard in the US. Restaurant: 18–20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5/day. Tour guide: $10–20/person (appreciated but never required with us). Uber/Lyft: 15–20%.

Safety

The Strip and tourist areas are safe. Standard city awareness applies: don’t flash large amounts of cash, watch your belongings in crowded areas. Our tours depart and return to your hotel — no navigating unfamiliar areas alone.

Getting Around

The Strip is walkable (though long). Uber/Lyft are reliable and cheap. For tours outside the city, we provide transportation — no rental car needed.
